Focus on faculty: Christian Tarchi, Ph.D.

The study “Assessing intercultural sensitivity: a narrative plot analysis of study abroad students’ video logs” by Christian Tarchi (ISI Florence), Alessio Surian (University of Padova) and Colette Daiute (City University of New York) was presented at the 16th biennial conference European Association of Learning and Instruction (EARLI), held in Limassol, Cyprus, August 25-29, 2015.

In this study the three scholars explored differences in the way students convey cultural experiences and how it relates to their intercultural awareness. The project involved twenty-eight American students from study abroad programs in Italy and thirty-four international students from the Italian Erasmus Mundus Master’s Program. Each student filled the Vancouver Index of Acculturation (Ryder et al., 2000) and the Acculturation Index (Ward & Kennedy, 1994). They then produced a two minute long video log to discuss a cultural misunderstanding encountered while studying abroad.
