ISI Florence and the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland are pleased to offer physics majors, engineering students, and other STEM majors the unique opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy for the Spring 2022 semester.
Perhaps more than any other field of study, STEM disciplines require the kind of global competencies that are gained during study abroad: the ability to work in diverse groups, to collaborate across cultures, and to problem-solve across disciplines. In recent years, an international experience has become vital for STEM students, who will be creating technologies that may impact the entire world. ISI Florence is committed to confronting these challenges by providing a variety of STEM courses taught entirely in English in one of the richest destinations (both culturally and artistically) for study abroad: Florence, Italy.
STEM students may either choose one or more courses to fit their curricular needs and preferences or participate in the following program tracks:
Sophomore Track
PHYS371 – Modern Physics (3 credits)
PHYS373 – Mathematical Methods for the Physical Sciences (3 credits)

Junior Track

Courses are designed to integrate the local resources, making Florence your classroom. Research activities will be conducted under the supervision of ISI Florence professor Simone Lolli. Also, a variety of co-curricular activities (in compliance with anti-Covid rules and if allowed by the latter) such as field trips, museum visits, academic tours, and artistic performances complement the in-class learning experience.
