On January 29, 2019 ISI Florence hosted the launch of the book “Frontiera Sud. L’Italia e la nascita dell’Europa di Schengen” (Milano, Mondadori Education – Le Monnier, 2018). Written by political science Professor Simone Paoli (ISI Florence – University of Pisa), this research illustrates the various steps that (from the mid-eighties onwards) gradually led to the current European Community laws regulating immigration and requests for political asylum. As the title suggests, the book focuses on the role that Italy played in this long, complex, and sometimes tormented process. In doing so, it also pays close attention to the impact that the so-called Schengen Treaty had on Italian politics, especially in regard to its immigration policy. Introduced by Prof. Stefano U. Baldassarri (Director, ISI Florence), the presentation was led by the following political science professors: Elena Dundovich (University of Pisa), Stefano Gallo (CNR, Naples), and Lorenzo Mechi (University of Padua). The author was also present and answered questions from both his colleagues and the audience.
