Splendor at Palazzo Rucellai

Written by Prof. Giuseppe Bolognese (formerly Professor of Italian Literature and Comparative Stylistics at the University of Kansas and The Flinders University of South Australia).

Inspiring, captivating, enriching: the substance of dreams. Such were my impressions as I climbed the welcoming steps inside Palazzo Rucellai. The occasion was the Italian launch on March, 27th of my critical edition of Man, Beast, and Virtue, the first translation into English of Pirandello’s 1918 play L’uomo, la bestia e la virtù, an elusive typescript kept at the Library of Congress; it has seen the light (Bordighera Press) a full century after the gifted translator, Alice Rohe, deposited her work at the US Copyright Office in 1923.

The collaborative venture with Professors Stefano Baldassarri and Emanuela Agostini of ISI Florence was a totally rewarding experience. To them goes my heartfelt gratitude.  My own involvement over many years with tertiary students of all levels from American and Australian institutions on study tours in Italy (Urbino, Florence, Bari) prompts me to say with confidence that those who enroll at ISI Florence are very lucky indeed: nowhere else would they find a more suitable, ideal environment for an authentic full-immersion experience in every respect: Let joy be unconfin’d.
