On September 18-19, 2019 the Dutch University Institute for Art History in Florence(NIKI) and the Scientific Committee of Avere Disegno hosted an international conference devoted to one of the most fascinating graphic media: red chalk. The essays of the eighteen speakers collected in the conference proceedings, edited by Michael Kwakkelstein (art history professor at ISI Florence) and Luca Fiorentino, are titled “Disegni a pietra rossa. Fonti, tecniche e stili 1550-1800 ca.” (Ed. Edifir series Avere Disegno, 2021) demonstrate the interweaving of technical and scientific findings with the insights yielded by the analysis of an artist’s different usesof the medium and its impact on style or of the interplay with other graphic media.
