The International Studies Institute of Florence was thrilled to see its faculty represented at the prestigious IUPAP/UNESCO International Colloquium on Physics for Society. The event, which included Nobel Laureates, connected the academic excellence of our study abroad program directly to the global discussions shaping the future of science.
Prof. Orozco Bridging Florence and the Quantum World
We are incredibly proud that Prof. Luis Orozco (University of Maryland), who recently taught the Modern Physics course at ISI Florence, served as the Moderator for the Colloquium’s fifth and final webinar, titled “Quantum Views”.
Prof. Orozco skilfully guided a conversation between two of the most distinguished minds in physics: Nobel Laureates Alain Aspect and William D. Phillips. The discussion was a unique opportunity to hear these pioneering scientists speak, not in dense academic terms, but in an open, accessible way about the latest and most exciting quantum breakthroughs.
What is the Quantum View?
The core of the discussion focused on quantum science (the physics that governs the smallest things in the universe), which has been driving major technological leaps for decades and transforming our everyday lives. The Nobel Laureates offered their perspectives on:
- How these incredible discoveries are pushing the boundaries of what we understand about Nature.
- The profound ethical and societal implications of new quantum technologies.
- The importance of science in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
A Look Ahead
The actual value of the “Quantum Views” discussion lies in its focus on the applied future of fundamental physics. Quantum mechanics is no longer just a theoretical framework; it is the basis for the next generation of computation, cryptography, and precision measurement. The work discussed by the Nobel Laureates—particularly regarding entanglement and coherence—shows that we are transitioning from merely understanding the quantum world to actively engineering it. This shift marks the beginning of a technological epoch with the potential to redefine human capability.

Our participation in this high-level international dialogue reinforces ISI Florence’s commitment to providing an education that is current, rigorous, and connected to the frontiers of discovery.
As the year concludes, we wish all our students, faculty, and the broader academic community a Happy New Year, full of successful endeavours and new scientific insights.
