As the title suggests, the over forty essays collected in “Le masque de l’écriture. Philosophie et traduction de la Renaissance aux Lumières”, edited by Charles Le Blanc and Luisa Simonutti (Geneva-Rome: Droz-CNR, 2015) focus on five centuries of translation theory and practice in the Western world. This  field of studies underwent far-reaching transformations between the XV and the XVIII century. Among the major scholars who called for such changes (bringing about, first of all, a new approach to the Bible) were the Italian humanists. To one of them ISI Florence Director Stefano U. Baldassarri devotes an article in this anthology (“Humanisme et traduction durant la Contre-Réforme: Girolamo Catena”), analyzing this humanist’s teachings on how to translate, above all, religious and scientific texts.
