As our time in Italy is coming to a close, we are looking back at our entire semester and how much we have adapted to the Italian culture. However, it took us some time to get to this point, so we thought it might be useful to give some advice to future study abroad students as to how they can acclimate themselves to their time in Italy.

  1. Walk around and explore the city. Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten path and wander down side streets: we have found some of our favorite spots by doing this. Take some time after class to go to a new spot. It’s the best way to find your way around and get to know Florence as a second home.
  2. Speak in Italian whenever you can. It doesn’t matter if you sound silly or make a few grammar mistakes — the people in Florence are very forgiving and willing to help you. They will applaud your efforts! You can also meet some wonderful people this way.
  3. Lastly, don’t be afraid to follow the locals. While American spots may be needed at times, don’t rely on them. You will learn so much about the Italian culture by branching out.

We have had such a wonderful experience this semester in Florence and can’t believe our time here is almost over. We are jealous of the students coming next semester because they are going to have the best experiences of their lifetime!
