On February 18, Italy commemorated the 450th anniversary of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s death with several cultural initiatives. On February 19, ISI Professor Silvia Catitti gave a lecture in Milan on Michelangelo as an architect between 1521 and 1527. She was one of the speakers in the monographic course entitled Michelangelo’s Life in 27 Episodes, which began last October. The course was organized by Professor Giovanni Agosti, a renowned Italian Renaissance scholar from the University of Milan, and the Foundation for the Environment, Italy (FAI). A private foundation since 1975, FAI finances educational initiatives that help promote and protect art, landscape, and nature on a national level. Professor Catitti’s lecture focused on Michelangelo’s New Sacristy and Laurentian Library, two of the most famous buildings of the modern era in the Western world. Excerpts from Michelangelo correspondence in 16th century Italian were recited live by Andrea Preti, a student from the acting school of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano.
