On Saturday, November 10, Tiziano Lucchesi (Prof. of Studio Arts at ISI Florence as well as restoration specialist at the prestigious Istituto per l’Arte e il Restauro Palazzo Spinelli) lectured at the third “Florence Art and Restoration Fair”. As the lecture’s title suggests (Pigments in History) Prof. Lucchesi provided a colorful survey of the main kinds of colors used from prehistoric to early modern times and the methods employed to produce them. As an expert on restoring medieval and Renaissance frescos, Prof. Lucchesi illustrated in detail the information passed down by centuries-old sources regarding the various stages that led to the making of colors in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In his talk he showed how the component parts were extracted, ground, and finally mixed with binders to become ready for use in art workshops. The very same techniques, let it be said in passing, that Prof. Lucchesi adopts and teaches every semester in his “The Art of Buon Fresco” class at ISI Florence.
