Traveling to Europe is a fun and exciting time in one’s life. Eating an endless amount of gelato while immersing yourself in the culture that surrounds you sounds like fun, doesn’t it?  However, here are a few tips to prepare you for spending time in a new environment.

  1. Make sure that you have a zippered bag on you at all times with your valuables (enough money for that day, copy of your passport, etc.) that you hold close to your body while on the go.
  2. Utilize technology and make sure that all of your information is backed up before you travel and continue to do so throughout the time abroad.
  3. Personal space does not exist in Italy.  Stay smart and always be aware of your surroundings. You may think you can anticipate how people may act or that you can trust anyone, but you never really know what other’s motives are.
  4. Keep an open mind and stay positive.  Allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone and try new things and meet new people.
  5. Allow yourself to get lost. It is one of the best ways to find the hidden treasures of the city you are in. It’s okay, you will find your way.
  6. Practice the language of the country you are in.  It’s okay to make mistakes. The locals will appreciate your efforts.
  7. Do not put a limit on what you can do or what you can try.  Never say never, always answer with a yes …. unless you are being catcalled, then say BASTA!!!
  8. Do not try to fit everything in in one weekend.  You are here for four months and will have time.  Just relax and remember to stay balanced, you can visit Europe again.
  9. Say goodbye to tipping. It’s simply not done here.  Side note, tap water at restaurants does not exist.  When you are offered water at a restaurant, they are offering you bottled water that you will be charged for it.
  10. Try not to think about home too much, it will only make you homesick.  Your family will be waiting for you after your amazing four months abroad and remember they are only a phone call away.

This is going to be a trip of a lifetime.  Allow yourself to grow personally and academically by exploring new places and trying new things.  Just remember to keep calm and carry on.  You are in such an amazing country so take full advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity.
