This volume focuses on the reporting of news about Italy in the European and American press from 1600 until the nation’s unification in 1861 and the conquest of papal Rome in 1870. The authors in the volume, some of whom first presented their research at a successful conference that took place at ISI Florence (International Studies Institute) in Florence in October 2024, not only examine news stories of the day, but, as importantly, the news language and ideological bias adopted in the reporting of such news.
The three editors—internationally esteemed in their respective fields of historical news discourse, Early Modern news, and Italian studies—have compiled an original and exciting volume which will enrich interdisciplinary research into Italy’s history and international standing, the language of the historical international press, and the strategies adopted even in the past to manipulate news events for ideological purposes. The thirteen chapters convey a vast array of Italian experiences and events—political, social, artistic, culinary, and more—that were communicated across Europe and America over some 270 years.
See www.chinednews.com for further information about the language of historical news, including the upcoming conference in Ragusa, Sicily (7-9 May 2026) titled “Discourses of and about women in the historical press (1600-1920)”.
